FAQ¶
Choosing a servo¶
How much torque headroom should I leave?
At least 100 % over your calculated load. A servo running near its stall torque draws heavy current, heats up, and drifts off position. The stall figure on a datasheet is a limit, not an operating point.
The torque figure changes with voltage. Which one applies to me?
The one at the voltage your supply actually delivers under load, not the nominal rating. A 2S LiPo labelled 7.4 V sags when the servo pulls current, so size from the sagged figure.
PWM or a bus interface?
PWM if you have one or two servos and a receiver or flight controller already driving them. A bus (serial, CAN or RS-485) once you pass three or four joints: one pair of wires daisy-chains them all and you can read back position, load and temperature.
Do I need metal gears?
Yes for anything that takes shock loads — hard landings, ground strikes, jammed mechanisms. A nylon gear train strips on the first real impact. For a gimbal that never gets hit, plastic is defensible.
Samples and orders¶
Is there a minimum order?
No. Order a single piece to evaluate. We would rather you test one against your actual rig than commit to volume on paper figures.
What should I include when asking for a quote?
Load, travel range, duty cycle and a target price. That is normally enough for us to name two or three models and attach the datasheets.
Can you change the cable, connector or gear ratio?
Cable length, connector type, gear ratio, firmware behaviour and control interface can all be modified. Tell us the application and the quantity and we will scope it.
Wiring and control¶
What PWM signal do the PWM models expect?
Standard RC pulses: 1000–2000 µs at roughly 50 Hz, 1500 µs centre. See PWM control.
My bus servo does not answer a Ping.
Check baud rate (default 1 Mbps), ID (default 1), common ground, and that you discard your own echo on a half-duplex line. See Getting started.
Can I power the servo from the same rail as my controller?
Not recommended. A stalling servo pulls enough current to brown out a microcontroller. Run separate supply rails with a common ground, or add bulk capacitance near the servo.
What happens if the servo is driven into its end stop?
It draws stall current and heats up. Set travel limits in your controller (angle limits) so the joint never reaches the stop under power.
Where do I find the packet format for the bus versions?
In the UART bus protocol: frame structure, the instruction set and error handling, each with a worked packet. Register addresses are in the control table.
Documents and support¶
Do I need to register to download anything?
No. Every document on this wiki is a direct link.
A file I need is not listed. Can you send it?
Yes — CAD models, 2D drawings, test reports, or a specification we have not published yet. Contact us.
How quickly do you reply?
Usually within one business day for technical questions and quote requests.
